Choose artwork with confidence by considering proportion, orientation, canvas format and the way the piece will live in your room.
Start with the wall.Then consider the furniture, viewing distance and shape of the artwork.
Measure before you choose
Three measurements make it much easier to judge scale accurately.

Measure the wall
Record the usable width and height, excluding doors, switches, lamps and other fixed elements.

Measure the furniture
If the artwork will sit above a sofa, bed or console, use that furniture as the visual anchor.

Mark the outline
Use low-tack tape or paper to test the proposed dimensions on the wall before ordering.
Find a balanced width
As a useful starting point, artwork above furniture often feels balanced at roughly two-thirds of the furniture width. Adjust for the room, negative space and composition.
Balanced
A clear relationship between artwork and furniture creates a more intentional grouping.
Statement scale
A larger piece can work when there is enough wall area and breathing room around it.
Example
For a 72 in / 183 cm sofa, begin by considering artwork around 48 in / 122 cm wide, then test a slightly smaller or larger outline on your wall.
Choose the shape of the space
Match the artwork’s orientation to the wall area it needs to occupy—not simply to the room type.
Landscape
Works naturally above sofas, beds, dining tables and long consoles.
Portrait
Suits narrow walls, reading corners, stair landings and spaces between openings.
Square
Creates a calm focal point and works well where the available wall area is evenly proportioned.
Pairs and sets
Treat the full arrangement—including the gaps—as one composition when measuring.

Rolled canvas
The painted canvas is supplied without wooden stretcher bars. It travels in a rigid tube and must be stretched or framed locally before display.

The canvas is mounted around wooden stretcher bars and arrives ready for hanging, subject to the hanging hardware used in your home.
Best whenYou want a clean canvas edge and do not require an outer decorative frame.Framed canvas
The stretched canvas is finished with the selected outer frame. The overall dimensions will be slightly larger than the listed canvas size.

A frame should connect the painting to its surroundings without overpowering its color, movement or texture.
Black
Adds definition and works well with graphic contrast, dark accents and contemporary interiors.
Natural wood
Brings warmth and pairs naturally with linen, stone, timber and quiet neutral palettes.
Light or metallic finishes
Can lift softer compositions or connect with hardware and decorative details already in the room.
Plan the hanging position
Use these as starting points, then adjust for furniture height, ceiling height and how the room is viewed.
A common starting point is to place the center of the artwork approximately 57–60 in / 145–152 cm from the floor.
Begin with roughly 6–10 in / 15–25 cm between the furniture and the lower edge of the artwork.
Keep the gaps consistent and measure the full outer width and height of the complete arrangement.
Before you place the order
Take one final minute to check the dimensions and format.
- Confirm whether the product size refers to the canvas or the overall framed dimensions.
- Check the artwork orientation against the available wall area.
- Leave enough clearance around furniture, lighting and doors.
- Confirm whether you selected rolled, stretched or framed canvas.
- Photograph your taped outline and view it from the room entrance.
